The best way to raise awareness about cyber security is to have more organizations involved – including yours! Each year Get Cyber Safe picks a cyber security topic or theme to promote for Cyber Month. You can choose to use the resources that reflect the yearly theme or the generic Cyber Month resources. Either way, these resources can help make participating easier. Show your audience that you care about their cyber security by using our Cyber Month resources.
What is Get Cyber Safe?
Get Cyber Safe is a national public awareness campaign created to inform Canadians about cyber security and the simple steps they can take to protect themselves online. The campaign is led by the Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSE), with advice and guidance from its Canadian Centre for Cyber Security (Cyber Centre), on behalf of the Government of Canada.

Being cyber safe isn’t just about protecting yourself right now – it’s about setting yourself up for a safer and easier future. This Cyber Month, we want to shed light on the practical benefits of cyber security that can make things easier for you in the future when you least expect it. Whether you’re using a password manager so you’re ready when your favourite artist announces their tour, backing up your files so you don’t lose an important presentation, or scheduling automatic updates so your device doesn’t restart in the middle of an online banking transaction, we’ll demonstrate the unpredictable and surprising ways cyber security can help keep your life on track.
This October, we’ll explore how starting strong cyber safe habits today can prepare you for online threats and whatever life throws at you tomorrow.
Week 1: Preparing your future self today
Getting ready for the future starts with you – which is why we’re kicking Cyber Month off by helping you secure your accounts. This week, we’ll cover relatable and unexpected ways account security can help you today and in the future by discussing:
- passphrases and passwords
- password managers
- multi-factor authentication (MFA)
- social media accounts
Week 2: Bringing your devices up to speed
Your devices are used for everything you do online. Securing them today can help you prepare for whatever the future throws at you like unexpected visitors , last minute travel, important presentations, and of course, cyber attacks. We’ll explain how small steps can help you get ready for anything by discussing:
- securing smart devices
- storage and backups
- private and public networks
Week 3: Cyber threats are evolving – are you?
As online threats become more sophisticated, it’s important that your knowledge does too. As certain tactics continue to evolve, knowing how to spot them can help prepare you for the future.
This week, we’ll discuss:
- phishing
- vishing
- reporting smishing through 7726 (SPAM)
- AI and sophisticated threats
Week 4: Starting new habits
Cyber criminals are skilled at being misleading. Forming strong cyber safe habits now and knowing how to spot suspicious signs when it comes to files, downloads, and messages can help you stay safe in the future. This week, we’ll discuss:
- malware
- ransomware
- anti-virus protection
- safe downloading
- AI
Week 5: Staying updated to stay safe
Online threats are always evolving, which means it’s important that your systems and software are too. Stay updated to handle anything in the future by learning about:
- system updates
- S.C.R.U.B topics
- software updates

Champions are key to the success of Cyber Month and the Get Cyber Safe campaign. The more Canadians learn about staying safe online, the more resilient we’ll all be against cyber threats.

How to participate
- Talk about the importance of Cyber Month with employees within your organization – our internal communication messages can help
